A middle-aged Englishman, whose father committed suicide when the man was thirteen years old, comes across some letters his father had sent from the trenches of World War One. Certain words and phrases in these letters reveal a side of his father he had never suspected when he was growing up. This sends him on a quest to find out more about his father’s life.
As he digs deeper and deeper into his family’s past, he uncovers a world he realizes he had never understood, could never even have imagined. Just beneath the surface of the apparently quiet, civilized, well-bred world of the family he had known as a child, there was a completely different reality, a parallel universe of suppressed loves and hates, sexual deviations and appallingly violent actions, involving not only his parents and grandparents and the rest of his family, but also himself.

I would recommend this - with a few words of warning.I almost closed and deleted this book before I was even past the first chapter. The way the mind of the main protagonist meanders haphazardly along a multitude of boring, long-winded, trivial directions can be both annoying and yes, totally boring.
But if you can get past that big hurdle, the rest of the story is quite relaxing in a captivating mysterious way.
However there are a few other blotches (thankfully of shorter lengths) throughout the book where the sleep-inducing, multi-pronged, and mainly irrelevant mind meandering occurs again. But again, if you can get past that, you are good to go.
Sadly the ending is not quite as dramatic nor as surprising as the author might have hoped. In fact, it felt like a bit of a let down .. as if this ending was where the author was always going towards but did not have quite the mystique to hold it together. It just didn't quite ring true. The author brought a number of improbable conclusions to the table to squeeze out the ending he wanted. Anti-climatic.

One Last Great Wickedness edition by David Stansfield Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I mostly really enjoyed this book. The author really has a gift with words, and I enjoyed the stream-of-consciousness style of the book. The plot was great, and although it was a bit slow to start, it was definitely a page-turner towards the end.
I did find some of the stream-of-consciousness ramblings to be boring and distracting. There were maybe 4 or 5 points during the book that I found myself skimming through them. At one point in particular near the end I was getting downright frustrated as a completely irrelevant diversion went on for several pages in the midst of what would otherwise be a very tense scene. It threw off the pace of the novel and was very annoying. This issue was big enough for me that it is the only reason I rated the book less than 5 stars, and annoying enough that I almost rated it 3 stars.
I was also a little disappointed by the very end. The twist itself was good, but then I felt the book ended in a very cliched way. I felt that it would be more in keeping with the overall introspective tone of the book to explore the ramifications of the twist more, rather than having the main character essentially take the easy way out. This did not really affect my rating though.
I put this book down a couple of times before finishing. The beginning seemed to ramble on without getting anywhere. Was this a family history story? A who-dunit? Navel gazing? It seemed neither fish nor fowl (to borrow a British phrase).
Finally the story seemed to pick up steam. The narrator was settling his mother's estate and found a disturbing bit of news - an event from his childhood turns out to be quite different than what he was told as a young child. With few people still around who can confirm or deny the events, he begins his own investigation.
Along the way, he pieces together bits of his life, and his parent's lives, that fill in parts of his own childhood puzzle. He comes to a shocking realization three people most dear to him could have committed a horrible crime. He pulls out favors and digs away for the truth....until...
I don't want to give away the surprise, but when it comes, it comes at a rush. The last chapters of the book takes it in a completely different direction and you get an ending tossed at you that you did not see coming. Looking back, there were a couple of clues, but not enough to foreshadow the end.
Be aware that there are a couple of child rape references, and several characters are gay. Didn't mind the gay characters - with the exception of one or two of the characters, they were handled as matter-of-factly as anyone else in the book. Did find the child rape quite disturbing even though it is a pivotal scene in the book and is seen through two characters quite differently.
Gave it three stars for two reasons the rushed ending and the very slow, flailing start. The middle was good - I was along with the narrator has he dissected his childhood and analyzed his family. Ultimately, the last third of the book made me quite uncomfortable. If that was what the author was aiming for - then he hit his target.
I would recommend this - with a few words of warning.
